School Profile

Tile Hill Wood School and Language College is distinctive in two main ways: it is Coventry’s only single-sex girls’ comprehensive school and is a specialist college for languages and for vocational education.

The school was the first in Coventry to be awarded ‘specialist school’ status as a Language College in 1998.

Following its ‘high-performing’ award it has also gained Vocational Specialist School status in 2006.

Being awarded ‘specialist school’ status brings many advantages to the school and has allowed us to develop such things as ICT resources and the school’s links with international partners. We have a strong focus on partnership, collaboration and innovation.

The school was last inspected by an Ofsted team in March 2007 We are very proud of the report we received. Full details of its content are available from the school on request.

The following are some of the findings.

‘Tile Hill Wood School is a good school with some outstanding features, where the specialist language college status is having a significant impact on many aspects of the school’s provision.’

‘Girls obviously enjoy coming to school and this is reflected in their positive behaviour and attitude to their work in lessons.’

‘All are pastorally very well cared for, and guided and supported well in their academic work. Staff go out of their way to ensure that all girls are supported, even when they face difficulties outside school.’

‘’The curriculum in the main school is outstanding, and good in the sixth form.’

The full range of National Curriculum subjects is provided and we offer significant choice of subjects at Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11) and in the West Coventry Sixth Form (our partnership with The Woodlands School). An increasing number of vocational or applied courses are on offer from September 2007, and through our Enterprise education and Work Related Learning programmes we aim to ensure that every student leaves the school equipped with the skills they need for working life or further study.

The range of activities offered to students to support language learning is extensive: links with other schools worldwide through exchanges, letters, electronic mail; a range of study visits to Europe and further afield including Japan; activities which support the development of international awareness including an annual International day during which there is a focus on another country. Our newly acquired vocational school status also means that we will be forging further positive links with employers.
