Geography

The Geography Department is made up of an enthusiastic team of specialist teachers each with interests in the different branches of the subject that effectively complement each other. Lessons are taught in three specialist rooms with easy access to a central office and resource area. A wide range of teaching methods are used and up-to-date materials are regularly added to existing stock to ensure that students are actively engaged in the well planned lessons. The department has developed a comprehensive and engaging VLE which students can access from home.

The broad and relevant curriculum which the department offers is planned using a team approach in which everyone has an input in and responsibilities for particular schemes of work. A shared understanding of key issues and up-to-date events ensures units are regularly reviewed and modified as appropriate. The emphasis is on the student’s investigative skills through the analysis of real data and real case studies. At GCSE level the department offers WJEC Specification B, The department also offers a BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Travel and Tourism.

In Yr12 and 13 the department offers the WJEC A Level Geography. The department also offer a very popular one year WJEC AS Level course in World Development.

The department has a very well established field work programme which ranges from short studies of adjacent woodland through to day visits to National Parks and residential field visits to Belgium and the Netherlands. Again the emphasis is on team planning and the development of our own case studies. The subject is a popular option subject at GCSE level and there is a good feed through to the AS and A2 courses. Students perform well in this subject and national data shows the KS3 levels and GCSE results to be outstanding.
